The problem with plastics DLO

For the past few weeks we have been doing a ‘problem with plastic DLO’s’.
We were learning how to explain the problem with plastics. We had to make a
google slide presentation and file it under our reading folder. We had to include
some information about how plastic is made, the effects of plastic in the ocean and
plastic islands. We had to give good examples of these subjects. Did you know that
160,000 plastic bags are being used every second!

I think I did well with my DLO bcause I gave some good examples and made it a bit
interesting. I enjoyed creating my DLO because I learnt awesome new facts too. Hope you like it!

Bay of Islands college orientation day!

On Thursday,
The year 8’s went to the Bay of Islands college for our orientation day. We had to sit in the gym and listen to some students introduce themselves. After the students finish their talk we stood up and sang a song. There were alot of year 8’s there, most of the year 8’s came from Kawakawa. The schools that were there were Oromahoe, Karetu, Kawakawa and Paihia. After the students talked we walked to the library and listened to the year 9’s dean talk about what we were doing. We were given little papers with our timetable on it. One of the subjects I liked was science. The teacher showed us little metal cubes called sodilised metal. We walked outside and there was two plastic containers filled with a liquid I didn’t know. Our teacher threw one little cube in, it started fizzing and catching on fire. Then it started fizzing and jumped out of the container and it looked like the water  fountain fireworks. Then our teacher put another metal cube in and it started fizzing straight away. My Aunty tried to walk towards it and then it popped and it gave my aunty a big fright. Then we went to other subjects. Then we went back to school and went home.

Project Energise

On Monday 30th of July, Te Ngahere had been learning about what we eat and if it is healthy or not. Our teacher was Whaea Gina.
We learnt about how much sugar is in an average can of Coca cola. Did you know that an average Coca cola has 10 teaspoons of sugar? There was a variety of drinks that had heaps of sugar. We had three posters sitting on the floor; the first one was coloured green for everyday drinks. The second poster was coloured orange. They could be consumed  sometimes and the third one was red for only occasional consumption. So now I know what to look out for when I'm in the shop, I am going to look for the things that are in the green and orange categories. The green poster had milk and water sitting on it and the orange poster had fruit juice, flavoured milk and powerade.
