Whaea Tracy

On Tuesday at Paihia School, we had a visitor. Her name was Whaea Tracy. She was here to teach us swimming skills on a beach and on a boat. Whaea Tracy picked about 6 people to act. Me, Vanya, Jack, Chum chum, Rymon, Dalton and John got picked to act. After we finished having Tracy, in class we had to make DLO’s about swim safety. We had to include 5 tips on how to stay safe on a boat or on the beach and then include some tips on what to do when you are on trouble. Here is my DLO. I hope you like it!

Energise - Fat

Yesterday, Te Ngahere were learning about fat. Our energise teacher ‘Whaea Gina’ came back to
Te Ngahere and showed us pictures of a healthy heart and a non healthy heart, they looked disgusting.
After that she showed us bottles of fake fat and pictures of the food that had the same amount of fat in the
bottle. A mcdonald's big mac burger has 10 teaspoons of fat in it. Did you know that Sushi only has 1
teaspoon of fat, Wow that’s healthy!
Did you also know that a Carls. Jr thickburger combo has 14 teaspoons of fat in it? Ew thats gross!
We need to know this info because we are trying to be healthier.

Cross country

Last week on Thursday, The whole of Paihia School went to Bledisloe for cross country.
I had to wait for about 3 hours for my race. I ran with my cousin Boombe. I felt nervous
when I stood at the starting line. Miss Hadwin yelled out “Ready!,Set!, GO!!!” We ran.
I ran up the hill and down the hill. I felt like I was going to slip when I ran down the hill.
I ran to the finish line and I came second.
I really liked that day!
I think I did well in running and also dodging the cow and horse poo.

Infographics

On Thursday, in Te Ngahere, we created something called infographics for our gaming presentation.
Infographics are graphics that show information. We had to go on a website called ‘easil.ly’.
It is a cool website. It’s kind of like a google drawing but way cooler. You can have different
pictures on your infographics and also make them look really cool. I really enjoyed making my first
infographic because I got really cool comments about it from my teachers. I really think  I did well
because I didn’t make my infographic boring  and filled with too much information. Next time I think
I could use more cool images.

The problem with plastics DLO

For the past few weeks we have been doing a ‘problem with plastic DLO’s’.
We were learning how to explain the problem with plastics. We had to make a
google slide presentation and file it under our reading folder. We had to include
some information about how plastic is made, the effects of plastic in the ocean and
plastic islands. We had to give good examples of these subjects. Did you know that
160,000 plastic bags are being used every second!

I think I did well with my DLO bcause I gave some good examples and made it a bit
interesting. I enjoyed creating my DLO because I learnt awesome new facts too. Hope you like it!

Bay of Islands college orientation day!

On Thursday,
The year 8’s went to the Bay of Islands college for our orientation day. We had to sit in the gym and listen to some students introduce themselves. After the students finish their talk we stood up and sang a song. There were alot of year 8’s there, most of the year 8’s came from Kawakawa. The schools that were there were Oromahoe, Karetu, Kawakawa and Paihia. After the students talked we walked to the library and listened to the year 9’s dean talk about what we were doing. We were given little papers with our timetable on it. One of the subjects I liked was science. The teacher showed us little metal cubes called sodilised metal. We walked outside and there was two plastic containers filled with a liquid I didn’t know. Our teacher threw one little cube in, it started fizzing and catching on fire. Then it started fizzing and jumped out of the container and it looked like the water  fountain fireworks. Then our teacher put another metal cube in and it started fizzing straight away. My Aunty tried to walk towards it and then it popped and it gave my aunty a big fright. Then we went to other subjects. Then we went back to school and went home.

Project Energise

On Monday 30th of July, Te Ngahere had been learning about what we eat and if it is healthy or not. Our teacher was Whaea Gina.
We learnt about how much sugar is in an average can of Coca cola. Did you know that an average Coca cola has 10 teaspoons of sugar? There was a variety of drinks that had heaps of sugar. We had three posters sitting on the floor; the first one was coloured green for everyday drinks. The second poster was coloured orange. They could be consumed  sometimes and the third one was red for only occasional consumption. So now I know what to look out for when I'm in the shop, I am going to look for the things that are in the green and orange categories. The green poster had milk and water sitting on it and the orange poster had fruit juice, flavoured milk and powerade.

Inquiry about Te Ngahere (The Bush)

For about 2 weeks Te Ngahere have been researching endemic and native birds from around New Zealand. We had to buddy up with someone who was in our literacy groups so I buddied up with Missy. Missy and I chose the Karearea (New Zealand falcon) to study about. We learnt about how it caught its prey and watched videos of it soaring through the air. We didn’t have that much information so next time my goal will be to have more info. I also think we did well with our presentation.

Explanation writing

Since term 1, Te Ngahere have been working on our explanation
writing about healthy ecosystems. Our learning intention was
was to use the correct structure for a explanation. We had to
write about a marine healthy ecosystem. We had to list what
an healthy ecosystem needed and what it already had for
example, a healthy ecosystem needs a producer, decomposer,
consumer and inorganic matter (non living things). I enjoyed
writing it because all I had to do is think of what I am going
to write and then write it down. I think I did good because
writing was correct. Next time I need to finish my writing quicker.
Here is my writing.

😕How to explain a healthy ecosystem😕

What is a healthy ecosystem?
A healthy ecosystem is an environment for both living and non living things. A healthy ecosystem needs decomposers, producers, consumers and inorganic matter, all these help build up a healthy ecosystem.

Some decomposers are fungi and bacteria, These eat non living things. Snapper, starfish and sharks are all consumers, Most consumers eat producers and decomposers. Some consumers eat other consumers like sharks. Producers are trees, algae and kelp, these produce energy .Inorganic matter are things that are not alive like water, air, sun, soil, shells and metal.

Inorganic matter are things that aren’t alive but they have important jobs like hiding creatures and good places for creature to live. Organic matter are creatures that can be consumers, producers and decomposers.

Ecosystems are fragile and if an ecosystem becomes unbalanced the food chain can also change and everything will be out of balance.  For example, if there were no producers in any ecosystems the consumers won’t have anything to eat and then the consumers will die. Then the only things that will be standing will be  inorganic matter.

Kaitiakitanga o te moana

For 2 weeks in Te Ngahere we have been working on something called ‘Kaitiakitanga o te Moana’. Our Learning intention was to make connections between what we viewed and what we read. I enjoyed watching the videos and typing up the words that are key information. We had to type some questions that we would want to ask google. After our presentation was finished we had to make another presentation from any app to show what we were learning.I did a google slide.

Animation

In term 1 we had been working on our animation about either food chains or healthy ecosystems. I made my animation about a food chain for cows. Next time I think I could use more alliteration. I think we did good because we put our own sound effects in our video.
Here is my animation.

2 weeks ago in Te Ngahere, we worked on our visual Pepeha. Our learning intention was to ‘Understand the Tikanga behind our Pepeha’. Our visual Pepeha had to be a presentation that showed ourselfs. I enjoyed making mine because I added images, music and backgrounds to it. Next time I would need to add my whanau in it to make it my best work. I hope you enjoy my visual Peheha.
